The sun sinks low on autumn's final day;
The waves that only now ran red and gold
Upon the beach are breakers of dull grey,
And winter's coming wind is sere and cold
Against the back of one who sits alone
Above the sea, whose face is worn with care.
Dust gathers now upon a vacant throne
Where once there laughed a queen with golden hair.
The light is gone. He stands, and gives a shake;
From out his coat he draws a tattered square —
The handkerchief, that once she bid him take —
And with a toss, he gives it to the air.
He sees it flutter once, and then 'tis gone
To lands unguessed at by a simple faun.
